Quality

Berkeley builds high-quality homes where people aspire to live. We do not have any standard property types or formats and no two Berkeley Group developments are the same. Our method is to work with renowned architects to create unique designs that meet our customers' needs. We continue to outperform the industry average for defects reported by customers six weeks after they move in, and our target is to deliver homes that are safer by design with zero defects.

We've contributed

Communities

We work with local people to create places that strengthen the community, improve people's quality of life and create a lasting social impact beyond the site boundary. Building homes is important to us but the spaces in- between are where community is created and encouraged to flourish. We invest in large-scale brownfield sites with the greatest potential for positive change and Community is the driving force behind the transformation. Our aim is to build more than 90% of our homes on brownfield land, provide the physical and digital infrastructure needed to keep our communities connected, deliver measurable long-term value of every development, and enable thriving communities for the long-run.

Climate Action

We have an ambitious, holistic approach for climate action, which includes designing efficient and resilient places alongside transformation changes to our construction processes and wider business operations. We have set stretching science-based targets that commit us to reducing our direct emissions, the embodied carbon in our supply chain and the in-use emissions created by our homes. We have been carbon neutral in our business operations since 2017 and our target is to be a net zero carbon business by 2040.

500 acres

of new or measurably improved natural habitats will be created across 43 of our developments

Nature

Since becoming the first homebuilder to set our leading commitment to achieving a net biodiversity gain on every site in 2017, we've used our Net Biodiversity Gain Toolkit in the masterplanning of 43 sites which, when combined, will create more than 500 acres of new or measurably improved natural habitats. In addition, we have voluntarily committed to expanding on our established approach to enhancing nature, so that we deliver an even more valuable and holistic contribution to the environment on every site, including biodiversity, water resources, flood resilience and air quality. By 2030, we aim to achieve an overall environmental net gain on all developments.

Our History and Our Future

The Berkeley Group was established in 1976 by Tony Pidgley CBE and Jim Farrer. Based in Weybridge, Surrey, the company initially focused on the construction of single homes and executive developments.

The company quickly became renowned for the quality of its product and exceptional customer service. Consequently, the business grew at a rapid pace. In December 1985, Berkeley gained a full listing on the London Stock Exchange. In less than ten years of operation, Berkeley had grown from an entrepreneurial business capitalised at £50,000 to a fully listed group valued at over £67 million.

Berkeley is now a FTSE 100 company and the only major UK developer delivering brownfield regeneration at scale.

We are bringing forward 32 of the most challenging and complex regeneration projects in the country and delivering some 10% of all new private and affordable homes in London.

In a typical year we deliver more than 4,000 homes of all types and tenures, alongside more than 150,000 square feet of commercial and community space.

Our values and philosophies are unchanged from our earliest days. We are committed to individual design, excellence through detail, respect for our customers and doing the right thing.

Group 611

The Berkeley Foundation is the independent charitable foundation set up by Berkeley Group in 2011. We work in partnership with the voluntary sector and others to help young people overcome barriers, improve their lives and build a fairer society.

We do this primarily by funding high-quality frontline support for marginalised young people. Our four focus areas are:

  • A safe place to call home: Ensuring young people have secure, stable accommodation
  • Health and wellbeing: Supporting young people to live happy, healthy lives
  • The skills to succeed: Helping young people develop the skills and capabilities they need to thrive
  • Access to employment: Enabling young people to overcome barriers to work and kick-start their careers

We have long-term relationships with selected strategic partners, and support 20 local charities chosen by Berkeley staff and close to Berkeley’s offices in London, Birmingham and the South of England. We also have a Community Investment Fund that provides targeted funding focused on specific issues, such as young people’s mental health.

Berkeley Group provides core funding for the Foundation and pays all its overheads, which means that every penny raised is spent on charitable activities.

On top of this, Berkeley staff do an incredible job of raising money through a busy calendar of fundraising events and Give As You Earn. Berkeley Group matches everything they raise, pound for pound. In total, staff have raised over £6 million since the launch of the Foundation.

Since 2011, we have committed more than £20 million in funding to our local communities, reaching 30,000 people.
